Exemplary Civic Behavior

Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, and to be prepared for every good work.

2

Tell them not to insult anyone; they should not be quarrelsome, but gentle and understanding with everyone.

3

God’s Goodness and Tenderness

For we were once foolish, disobedient, and misled ourselves. We were slaves to our desires, pursuing all kinds of pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another.

4

Still, when the great goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared,

5

he saved us not because of any good deeds we did, but because of his mercy, through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit

6

poured out on us richly through Christ Jesus our Savior,

7

so that, being justified by his grace, we might become heirs, with the hope of eternal life.

8

The saying is sure; I want you to emphasize these points so that those who believe in God will be motivated to do good deeds. That’s what matters and benefits us.

9

Avoid pointless arguments, genealogical debates, and quarrels about the law, because they are useless and worthless.

10

After a first and second warning, have nothing more to do with anyone who causes division,

11

knowing that such a person is misled, sinful, and self-condemned.

12

Final Greetings

When I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, try to join me at Nicopolis because I have decided to spend the winter there.

13

Send Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way quickly, and make sure they have everything they need.

14

Our people must learn to excel in good works and respond to urgent needs, instead of staying idle and useless.

15

All who are with me send you greetings. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all.
