ORACLES AGAINST GOG

Against Gog: Eschatology

The word of the Lord came to me:

2

“Son of man, turn toward Gog of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him.

3

Say to him: Hear the word of the Lord: I am coming to strike you, Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal.

4

I will turn you around, put hooks in your jaws, and bring you out with your entire army—horses and riders, all well-equipped, a great army, all wielding shields and bucklers, and brandishing swords.

5

Persia, Cush, and Put are with you, all armed with shields and helmets.

6

Gomer and all his troops, along with Beth-Togarmah from the far north, and their battalions; a vast host, are with you.

7

Get ready and be prepared, you and all your troops gathered around you. Take command of them.

8

After many days, you will be given a mission. In the years to come, you will invade a land that has recovered from war, where people from many nations have settled on the mountains of Israel, which had long been barren. Its people were brought from among the nations, and now they all live safely.

9

Then you will move up like a storm, like a cloud covering the land, you and all your troops, along with many nations.

10

Thus says the Lord: On that day, your thoughts will turn to devising evil schemes. You will say:

11

‘I will attack unprotected towns, those peaceful people living safely without walls, bars, or gates.

12

I will plunder and loot; I will attack the land that is inhabited again. I will go against this people gathered from among the nations, who live by trading and are increasing their cattle at the center of the world.’

13

People of Sheba and Dedan, along with all the merchants of Tarshish and their villages, will ask you, ‘Have you come to plunder? Is it to loot that you have assembled such an army?’ They will come with silver and gold to take the livestock and buy your enormous booty.

14

Therefore, prophesy, son of man, and tell Gog on my behalf: On that day, when my people Israel are living securely, you will come from the far north,

15

you, and the crowds with you, all on horses, with many troops, a huge army.

16

You will come against my people Israel like a cloud about to cover the earth. It will be in the distant days that you will come against my people, and I will allow it so that the nations may know me, for I will reveal my holiness through you, O Gog!

17

Thus says the Lord: You are the one I spoke of earlier, through my servants, the prophets of Israel, saying that I would bring you against them in distant days.

18

On that day, when Gog comes to the land of Israel—word of the Lord—my fury will be stirred.

19

In the jealousy and heat of my anger, I declare: On that day, there will be a great earthquake in Israel.

20

The fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the beasts of the field, the creatures that crawl on the ground, and every human on the earth will tremble before me. Mountains will fall, cliffs will crumble, and walls will collapse.

21

I will summon the sword against Gog on all my mountains—word of the Lord. Each person’s sword will turn against his brother.

22

I will punish Gog with plague and bloodshed. I will send torrential rain, hailstones, and burning sulfur on him, on his battalions, and on the many nations with him.

23

I will reveal myself as the mighty and Holy One in the sight of these many people, and they will know that I am the Lord.

Commentaries

38:1 - 39:25

Against Gog: Eschatology.

Ezekiel is not satisfied just announcing future promises for a renewed Israel, recently settled in its land. It seems that the Name and power of the Lord have not been sufficiently “avenged” for the outrage he has endured before other peoples and nations. These chapters describe, in apocalyptic terms, what the Lord’s vengeance will be. From the far north (39:1), the origin of ancient invasions, the Lord causes the armies of Gog, king of Magog—representing all the peoples who want to attack Israel—to surge like a massive avalanche. This renewed Israel, living securely in cities without walls, gates, or bars, will be the place where God will confront all enemies of His people to deliver final vengeance by annihilating them all. This “day of the Lord” will be the day of His ultimate triumph and lasting peace for Israel. Consequently, the glory of His name will finally be revealed to the nations, demonstrating that Israel’s failure and humiliation were due to their sin, not the weakness of their God.
