Ezekiel
Chapter 48
This is the list of the tribes. In the far north, from Hethlon to Lebo-hamath, then to Hazar-enon, with the frontier of Damascus lying to the north and bordering Hamath—each section extends from the eastern border to the western border: Dan, one section.
Next, bordering Dan from the east to the west: Asher.
Bordering Asher, from the eastern frontier to the western frontier: Naphtali.
Bordering Naphtali, from the eastern to the western frontier: Manasseh.
Bordering Manasseh, from the eastern frontier to the western frontier: Ephraim.
Bordering Ephraim, from the eastern frontier to the western frontier: Reuben.
Bordering Reuben, from the eastern frontier to the western frontier: Judah.
Bordering Judah, from the eastern frontier to the western frontier, is the part you are to set aside, twenty-five thousand cubits wide, and as long as each of the other portions from the eastern frontier to the western frontier. The Sanctuary will be in the center of it.
The part you must set aside for the Lord is to be twenty-five thousand cubits long and ten thousand cubits wide.
This consecrated portion is to belong to the priests, on the north side twenty-five thousand cubits; on the west side ten thousand cubits wide; on the east side ten thousand cubits wide; and on the south side twenty-five thousand cubits long. The Sanctuary of the Lord will be at the center of it.
This area is to belong to the consecrated priests, specifically to those of the sons of Zadok, who maintained my liturgy and did not go astray with the straying Israelites, as the Levites did.
And so, their portion is to be taken from the most holy part of the land, adjacent to the territory of the Levites.
The territory of the Levites, like that of the priests, is to measure twenty-five thousand cubits in length and ten thousand cubits in width—the entire length being twenty-five thousand and the width ten thousand.
They must not sell or exchange any part of it; and their section can never be sold or transferred, since it is dedicated to the Lord.
The remaining area, five thousand cubits by twenty-five thousand cubits, is to be a non-sacred space for the city, including houses and pastures. The city is to be located at the center.
Here are its measurements: on the north side, four thousand five hundred cubits; on the south side, four thousand five hundred cubits; on the east side, four thousand five hundred cubits; on the west side, four thousand five hundred cubits.
And the city pastures are to extend two hundred and fifty cubits to the north, two hundred and fifty to the south, two hundred and fifty to the east, two hundred and fifty to the west.
What remains of the part set aside, after keeping out the consecrated portion, consists of ten thousand cubits eastward and ten thousand westward, alongside the consecrated portion; this will generate revenue for feeding the people working inside the city.
These people are to be drawn from all the tribes of Israel and shall till this land.
The portion is to have a total area of twenty-five thousand cubits by twenty-five thousand cubits. So, the sacred portion has a square shape and is located beside the land belonging to the city.
What is left over on either side of the sacred portion and the land belonging to the city shall be for the prince, extending along the twenty-five thousand cubits eastward to the eastern boundary, and extending along the same distance westward to the western boundary—running parallel to the other portions. This is the portion for the prince, with the consecrated section and the temple sanctuary at the center.
Thus, apart from the property of the Levites and the property of the city within the prince’s portion, everything between the borders of Judah and Benjamin will belong to the prince.
Here are the remaining tribes, listed from the eastern to the western frontier: Benjamin.
Bordering Benjamin, from the eastern to the western frontier: Simeon.
Next, from the eastern to the western frontier: Issachar.
Then, from the eastern to the western frontier: Zebulun.
Following that, from the eastern to the western frontier: Gad.
The southern border of Gad will be defined by the southern frontier, which runs through Tamar, to the waters of Meribah in Kadesh, then to the Wadi of Egypt, and finally to the Great Sea.
This is the inheritance of the tribes of Israel, and this is how you will apportion it,”—the Lord declares.
30bOn the north side, which is four thousand five hundred cubits long, are three gates: the gate of Reuben, the gate of Judah, and the gate of Levi.
The gates of the city will be named after the tribes of Israel.
On the east side, also four thousand five hundred cubits long, are three gates: the gate of Joseph, the gate of Benjamin, and the gate of Dan.
On the south side, again four thousand five hundred cubits long, are three gates: the gate of Simeon, the gate of Issachar, and the gate of Zebulun.
On the west side, measuring four thousand five hundred cubits long, are three gates: the gate of GAD, the gate of Asher, and the gate of Naphtali.
The total perimeter will be eighteen thousand cubits, and the city’s name will be: “The Lord is There.”

Commentaries
New Temple and New Land.
The new temple is designed to avoid past mistakes: it will be reinforced. It will have new boundaries to separate the holiness of the people and their land (42:20). Everything will be reorganized from the sanctuary (43:12). God is returning to dwell among His people. This time, it will be forever (43:7).
Spring of the Temple.
From the temple flows the living water that transforms the earth into a new paradise (cf. Jl 3:18; Zec 14:8). This vision concludes the entire Bible after the wedding of the Lamb in the book of Revelation (Rev 22:1-2). This image is the final summary of the reclaimed territory and the rebuilt city and temple (48:30-35). The city gains a symbolic name full of hope for the Israelites in exile: “God is here.”
