Against Mount Seir

The word of the Lord came to me:

2

“Son of man, turn your face toward the mountain of Seir; prophesy against it and say:

3

Thus says the Lord: I am coming to strike you, mountain of Seir! I have extended my hand against you, and I will turn you into a mournful wasteland.

4

I will reduce your towns to ruins, make you a desolation, and you will know that I am the Lord.

5

I know your long-standing enmity and how you handed over the people of Israel to the sword during their time of disaster, when their sins came to an end.

6

Because of that, as I live, says the Lord, I intend to give you over to bloodshed, and bloodshed will pursue you.

7

I will make the mountain of Seir a mournful wasteland and destroy all who come and go there.

8

The mountains will be filled with the slain; the victims of the sword will fall on your hills, in your valleys and ravines.

9

I will reduce you to desolate ruins forever; your towns will no longer be inhabited, and then you will know that I am the Lord.

10

You said: ‘These two nations and these two countries will be mine. We shall take possession of them,’ and you ignored the Lord, who was there.

11

Because of that, as I live, declares the Lord, I will deal with you according to your hatred toward them; and I will reveal myself among them when I judge you.

12

Then you will know that I, the Lord, have heard all the insults spoken against the mountains of Israel, such as: ‘They are devastated and have been handed over to us to be devoured.’

13

For I heard you boast against me without restraint.

14

Thus says the Lord: When the whole earth rejoices, you will be left desolate.

15

Since you rejoiced when Israel’s inheritance became abandoned ruins, I will treat you the same way. You will become a desert, Mount Seir, and Edom alike; and all will know that I am the Lord.

Commentaries

35:1 - 35:15

Against Mount Seir.

Amidst the promises of return to the land and restoration, it is unavoidable to speak again against Edom, Israel’s neighboring kingdom, which exploited the chaos caused by the Babylonian invaders to take revenge on its former rulers (cf. 25:12-14).
