1

Son of man, prophesy against Gog! Say to him: Thus says the Lord: I am coming against you, Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal.

2

When I have led, directed, and brought you from the far north to the mountains of Israel,

3

I will break the bow in your left hand and snatch the arrows from your right hand.

4

You will fall on the mountains of Israel, along with your battalions and the nations with you. I will give you over to all the birds of prey and wild animals

5

when you have fallen in the open countryside, for I have spoken, declares the Lord.

6

I will send fire to the land of Magog and to those living peacefully in the islands, and they will know that I am the Lord.

7

I will reveal my holy name among my people Israel, and I will never again allow my holy name to be profaned. The nations will know that I am the Lord, the Holy One of Israel.

8

All of this will happen—word of the Lord. This is the day I predicted.

9

After that, the people of the towns in Israel will set fires using your weapons as fuel: small and large shields, bows and arrows, clubs, and javelins. For seven years, they will be used as fuel.

10

You won’t need to bring wood from the countryside or gather it in the forests, since they will be using your weapons to burn. They will turn against their oppressors and loot those who looted them—word of the Lord.

11

On that day, I will give Gog a well-known burial place in Israel, the valley of Abarim, east of the sea—the valley where travelers must stop. There, they will bury Gog and his hordes, and it will be called the Valley of Gog’s Multitude.

12

It will take seven months to bury the dead and cleanse the land.

13

All the people will work to bury the dead, and this will be their honor on the day I am glorified, says the Lord.

14

Men will go around the country regularly, burying those lying on the ground, to cleanse the land. They will search for seven months.

15

If, while moving through the land, they find human remains, they will pile stones beside them until the gravediggers bury them in the Valley of Gog’s Multitude

16

(the town’s name is Multitude). In this way, the land will be cleaned.

17

Son of man, the Lord says this: Say to every kind of bird and wild beast: Assemble and come together from all parts to the sacrifice I am preparing for you. It will be a great sacrifice on the mountains of Israel, where you will eat flesh and drink blood;

18

the flesh of heroes and the blood of the world’s princes. They are all rams, lambs, goats, and bullocks, all fattened animals from Bashan.

19

You will eat all the fat you want and drink blood until you’re drunk at the sacrifice I am preparing for you.

20

You will have your fill of horses, riders, heroes, and warriors of all kinds— words of the Lord.

21

I will display my glory among all the nations, and they will recognize my judgment and the punishment I will inflict upon them.

22

Then Israel will understand from that day forward that I am the Lord, their God.

23

And the nations will realize that Israel was exiled because they were unfaithful to me; that is why I hid my face from them. I handed them over to their enemies, and they perished by the sword.

24

I dealt with them as their defilement and sins deserved, and I hid my face from them.

25

That is why, thus says the Lord: Now, moved by my compassion for Israel, I will bring back the captives of Jacob and give glory to my holy name.

26

They will forget their shame and the treachery they committed against me when they live securely in their own land, with no one to disturb them.

27

When I gather them from among the nations and from the land of their enemies, I will reveal my holiness to many nations through them.

28

They will recognize that I am the Lord their God when, after their exile among the nations, I bring them together in their own land and leave no one behind.

29

Never again will I hide my face from them, because I will pour out my Spirit on Israel—word of the Lord.

38:1 - 39:25

Against Gog: Eschatology.

Ezekiel is not satisfied just announcing future promises for a renewed Israel, recently settled in its land. It seems that the Name and power of the Lord have not been sufficiently “avenged” for the outrage he has endured before other peoples and nations. These chapters describe, in apocalyptic terms, what the Lord’s vengeance will be. From the far north (39:1), the origin of ancient invasions, the Lord causes the armies of Gog, king of Magog—representing all the peoples who want to attack Israel—to surge like a massive avalanche. This renewed Israel, living securely in cities without walls, gates, or bars, will be the place where God will confront all enemies of His people to deliver final vengeance by annihilating them all. This “day of the Lord” will be the day of His ultimate triumph and lasting peace for Israel. Consequently, the glory of His name will finally be revealed to the nations, demonstrating that Israel’s failure and humiliation were due to their sin, not the weakness of their God.
