This long journey was perilous due to bands of robbers hiding along the caravan routes; the risk was higher when pilgrims carried valuable loads. However, Ezra chose not to accept a military escort, showing the emperor the power of his God, who cares for his faithful. He also taught the pilgrims to rely on God instead of on humans. Once again, the desert acts as a testing ground.
