The septenary of the bowls follows the dramatic pattern of the seven trumpets, previously mentioned above (8:7ff). However, it is not just a repetition or an appendix. The sounding of the trumpets hinted at incompleteness—there was often talk of partial numbers. Now, the bowls assume a universal scope: they impact all of humanity and nature. The final opportunity for repentance comes. The Book of Revelation does not merely evoke the Exodus but reinterprets it as a fulfillment. Divine wrath reaches its ultimate consequences. Yet, God urgently calls for a positive response of worship.
