I Sought Her as a Wife

Wisdom demonstrates her strength across the earth, rightly ordering all things.

2

I loved her and sought her from my youth; I longed to have her as my bride because I had fallen in love with her beauty.

3

Her closeness to God reveals her noble origin, for the Lord of all has loved her.

4

She is trained in God’s knowledge and chooses his works.

5

If we desire riches in life, what is wealthier than Wisdom, who is the active cause of everything?

6

When intellect reveals itself through action, she who creates all the more so.

7

If you love righteousness, every virtue results from her labor, for she teaches temperance, prudence, justice, and courage—everything most valuable in life.

8

For those eager for experience, she knows what happened in the past and predicts the future. She has the art of interpretation, knows how to solve riddles, predicts signs and wonders, and foresees the end of ages and eras.

9

That is why I decided to make her my lifelong companion, knowing she would be a wise counselor and support me in times of worry and distress.

10

I thought: With her, I will gain glory among nations and, despite my youth, honor among elders.

11

I will be known for sound judgment and admired by the powerful.

12

If I stay silent, they will wait for my words; if I speak, they will listen; even if I talk extensively, they will still keep quiet.

13

Thanks to her, I will attain immortality, and I will leave an everlasting memory for those who come after me.

14

I will govern peoples, and nations will be subject to me.

15

Fearsome rulers will tremble when they hear my name, but I will be kind to my people; in battle, I will be courageous.

16

When I return home, I will rest with her, for nothing is bitter in her company, and sharing life with her brings no suffering—only pleasure and joy.

17

Reflecting on all this, I realized I could achieve immortality by uniting with Wisdom.

18

I would find pure delight through friendship with her, endless riches in her deeds, understanding from being with her, and fame from sharing her company. That is why I began seeking her and claiming her as my own.

19

I was a cheerful child,

20

good-natured, or rather, in my goodness, I entered a pure body.

21

Knowing that I could only gain Wisdom if it were given to me by God—and understanding that recognizing the giver shows intelligence—I turned to the Lord and begged him wholeheartedly:

Commentaries

1:1 - 10:21

Final Judgment.

The wise man and the fool are the two extremes in this first section. The former acknowledges himself as part of God’s plan; the latter, on the other hand, relies solely on his own strength. According to the book of Wisdom, God’s judgment will come relentlessly upon the wicked as punishment. Two thousand years later, this message still holds relevance: those who know God understand they are in his hands, part of his plan, established long ago.

7:22 - 8:1

Reflection of Eternal Light.

This section explains the nature of wisdom, drawing from Greek philosophy applied to the Jewish faith (Sir 24:3; Jn 1:5, 9; Col 1:15). It starts by listing 21 traits of wisdom (22ff) and continues by exploring its connection to God and creation (7:24-8:1), similar to Prov 8:22-31, which serves as the prologue to all theology that inspires John (Jn 1:3, 10), Paul (Col 1:15-17), and Hebrews (Heb 1:3). In this way, the author shows the superiority of wisdom over Greek knowledge. How can we identify true wisdom? Is it possible to find it in a world often distant from truth and caught up in selfish games? Yes, as long as there are people who, through their lives, bring hope and purpose to those who have lost them, and as long as others recognize them.

8:2 - 8:21

I Sought Her as a Wife.

The search for wisdom is the main focus of this part of the king’s speech. The theme develops at two levels: first, the decision to seek wisdom (2:9, 17, 19-21), and second, the benefits gained through it (3-8, 10-16, 18).
