For Baruch

These are the words of Jeremiah the prophet to Baruch, son of Neriah, who wrote on a scroll what Jeremiah dictated. It was in the fourth year of the reign of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah, when he said:

2

“There is a word from the Lord for you, Baruch. Why do you complain:

3

‘Alas for me! I am weary of sighing, and I find no rest!’

4

The Lord says: ‘When I am knocking down what I have built and pulling up what I have planted,

5

why do you want great things for yourself? Don’t seek them! Yet, though I am about to send disaster on everyone —word of the Lord— you will be safe wherever you go.”

Commentaries

45:1 - 45:5

For Baruch.

This brief chapter, which serves as a personal message, reminds us that Baruch, Jeremiah’s secretary, has also faced his share of difficult times. The prophet offers him comfort with an exceptional promise (5), a promise related to the safety and integrity of his life, which God Himself will protect.
