1 John
Chapter 5
Conclusion
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God; and everyone who loves the parent loves the child.
How can we know that we love God’s children? If we love God and obey his commandments,
because God’s love requires us to keep his commandments. In fact, his commandments are not burdensome
because everyone born of God overcomes the world. And our victory that overcomes the world is our faith.
Who conquers the world? The one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
This is the one who came by water and blood—not just water, but water and blood. And the Spirit also testifies to him, for the Spirit is truth.
There are, then, three witnesses:
the Spirit, the water, and the blood, and the three agree.
If we accept human testimony, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God that he has testified to his Son.
If you believe in the Son of God, you have God’s testimony in you. But those who do not believe make God out to be a liar, because they do not believe his testimony about his Son.
And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
Keep yourselves from idols
I write these things to you so that you may know that you have eternal life, you who believe in the name of the Son of God.
Through him, we are fully confident that whatever we ask according to his will, he will grant us.
If we know that he hears us whenever we ask, then we know that we already have what we requested of him.
If you see your brother or sister committing a sin that does not lead to death, you will ask, and God will give life to such a one. I am referring specifically to the sin that does not lead to death. There is also a sin that leads to death; I am not speaking about praying for this.
Every kind of wrongdoing is sin, but not every sin leads to death.
We know that those born of God do not sin, but the one begotten by God he protects, and the evil one cannot touch them.
We know that we belong to God, while the whole world lies under the power of the evil one.
We know that the Son of God has come and has given us the power to understand the one who is true. We are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and everlasting life.
Children, be on your guard against idols.
