Luke narrates Paul’s arrest in detail and offers his interpretation of the events: Roman authority protects Paul from the attacks of the Jews. Through this intense scene, Luke emphasizes a larger story: Jerusalem’s rejection of the Gospel’s final offer. Although Paul extends peace, Jerusalem responds with violence. When Paul is taken away, Jerusalem is left behind and no longer appears in Acts. The Roman commander saves Paul from death by chaining him, and thus, until the end of the book, Paul remains a prisoner, being moved from place to place until he reaches Rome.
