They also started arguing among themselves about who should be considered the most important.
25
Jesus said:
“The kings of the pagan nations dominate them as lords, and those in authority over them are called ‘Benefactors.’”
26
But not so with you; instead, let the greatest among you become like the youngest, and the leader like the one who serves.
27
For who is the greatest: the one who sits at the table, or the one who serves? Isn’t it the one who sits? However, I am among you as one who serves.
28
You are the ones who have been with me and stood by me through my troubles;
29
because of this, just as the kingship has been given to me by my Father, so I give it to you.
30
You will eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones and govern the twelve tribes of Israel.
Commentaries
Against Ambition.
No sooner has the news of betrayal been announced than a dispute arises among the disciples about who is the most important. This shows that the issue of betrayal is not only in one person’s mind. We know it will be Judas, but here we see that there are other ways to betray the Master. Jesus emphasizes the importance of service, which should define his community and the new society of the kingdom.
