Travels, Visits, and Farewells.

During this European journey, Paul concentrates on visiting established communities. After returning from Macedonia, he is accompanied by helpers who may be collecting funds for the Church in Jerusalem. From his letters, we learn that Paul travels through Macedonia collecting funds for the poor Church in the Holy City. Luke overlooks this purpose and depicts the journey as a farewell and a testament. He spends the Passover holidays with the community in Philippi. Then, in Troas, “on a Sunday,” he celebrates the “breaking of bread.” This is the first mention in the New Testament of such a celebration on Sunday, which aligns with the day of the resurrection (cf. Lk 24:1-36; Jn 20:19-26).
