This account draws from 1 Kings 12:1-24. It presents Jeroboam’s rebellion as a punishment for Solomon’s sins (4:10f, 14), which are described in 1 Kings 11:1-13 and have been overlooked by the Chronicler. It also assumes that readers are familiar with Jeroboam’s rebellion and the story of the prophet Ahijah of Shiloh, detailed in 1 Kings 11:29-40 (15). Framed this way, the complaints of the northern tribes seem unsubstantiated. Therefore, the division in the North is depicted as a servant’s rebellion against his master (13:6).
