The following three sections address the temptation of power. The communities face problems because some try to showcase their power by flaunting their wealth (1-13), their faith (2:14-26), and their wisdom (3:1-12). The gap between believing in Jesus and discriminating against others is unacceptable to James, especially as this attitude is likely to have worsened with the arrival of wealthy members (6ff). The message is clear: discrimination against the poor contradicts faith in Jesus.
