It is important to note that this arranged marriage, like all marriages of the time, was between Othniel and Achsah. Caleb is a faithful father to the customs of his people; he does not marry his daughter to a Canaanite (3:6). In ancient times, parents often arranged marriages to protect and keep land within the same clan. The marriage Caleb arranges for his daughter with Othniel can be seen as a kind of “ideal” relationship between father and daughter. First, he finds her a husband from his tribe, and more importantly, the girl can negotiate with her father and insist that he provide her with land that has springs. The father agrees to her request and fulfills her wishes.
