This model of a folding and portable sanctuary is half the size of Solomon’s temple, as described in 1 Kings 6:2, 16f. The entire structure functions as the ultimate sacred space: the Holy of Holies, or the most holy place, where the ark was kept with its lid (34f). Everything marks the proper place of the Lord while also establishing the “circles” of holiness, based on how close or remote that place is, and thus, determining the holiness of people depending on the areas they could occupy in the Sanctuary. We must remember that we are dealing with a very particular way of thinking, such as that of the priestly theological-literary school (P), and that these rules come from a very different and distant time from when the Lord led His people through the desert. It would be contradictory for a God who reveals Himself as willing to live among His people to suddenly decide to “pigeonhole” Himself in the limited space described here.
