The ablutions facilitate the transition from the profane to the sacred realm. Unlike the other elements included for the cult in the Sanctuary, the bronze fountain is not described, nor are its measurements provided; furthermore, it is not mentioned in 38:29-31, where the amount of bronze collected by the people is shown, along with its intended use. Because of this, many biblical scholars believe that it is a late addition. The detailed craftsmanship of the oil highlights its divine significance, as it is used to consecrate all worship elements of the Sanctuary and for the anointing of Aaron and his sons. In ancient consecration ceremonies, only Aaron or the high priest was anointed with sacred oil (29:7-9); in this case, the consecration also extends to Aaron’s sons, which is why many biblical scholars see this as an additional late addition.
