The use of plural pronouns indicates that this psalm was sung by the community. It doesn’t sound like a national anthem, and the message is clearly meant for individual members of the congregation. The terms ‘anger’ and ‘wrath’ of God (v. 11) have been used before (see Ps 6:2) to describe life’s brevity and suffering. In fact, he can admire those who loved God even without them. As these individuals aged, one might have expected their love for God to weaken as their hope diminished. However, it seemed to grow stronger instead. Could this be because the revelation was already beginning to dawn?
What is the meaning of life? What are our values? We cannot create a ‘tomorrow’ without relying on God. This psalm can help us.
Our days pass like a sigh. Our earthly life is brief and fragile before the face of the eternal God. He is our refuge and can give purpose to our existence. Let us ask him to fill it with wisdom, which is to love him, praise him, and serve him.
