This psalm reminds us of our temporary lives! At first, we might think that the simple answer to the problem of evil is that the prosperity of the wicked is short-lived, so it’s not a real difficulty. But this psalm seems to draw a clear line. Wealth cannot buy eternal life (v. 10); it cannot ‘ransom the soul,’ but God can ransom it (v. 16). The opening verses hint at a significant revelation. At least, we stand on the verge of the Good News of eternal life. It’s worth remembering ‘to store up treasure with God, where no moth or rust can destroy, nor thief come and steal it’ (Lk 12:21). This psalm offers guidance for our lives. May it lead us not to be shepherded by death, but by the Good Shepherd.
