The psalmist, in his desperation, seems to seek revenge against those who have wronged him. He is righteous but struggles to forgive because of the narrowness of his human mind and heart. Yet, he does good to them and prays for them (vv. 4 and 5). The psalmist did not have the teachings of Jesus, whose words would have comforted him, but we do. Therefore, we also might find ourselves in situations described in verses 2 to 5 and not know what to do. However, Jesus in Matthew 5:44 says, ‘Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.’ These words may be difficult to accept, but if we follow them, they will surely bring us relief, comfort, and peace at all times.
