Leviticus
Chapter 19
Various Precepts
“Speak to the entire assembly of the people of Israel and say to them: Be holy for I, the Lord, your God, am holy.
The Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
You must revere your mother and father, and you shall keep my Sabbaths; I am the Lord, your God.
Do not turn to idols or make for yourselves molten gods; I am the Lord, your God.
When you offer a sacrifice of peace offerings to the Lord, make the sacrifice so that you may be accepted.
It must be eaten on the day it is offered or the next. Any leftovers shall be burned on the third day.
If it is eaten on the third day, it is unclean and will not be accepted.
Whoever eats it will be held accountable for his sin, for he has profaned a holy thing of the Lord, and this person shall be cut off from his people.
When you harvest your land, don’t cut to the edge of your field or collect the leftovers after your harvest.
Don’t strip your vineyard completely and don’t gather the fallen grapes; leave them for the needy and the stranger. I am the Lord, your God.
Do not steal, lie, or deceive one another.
Do not swear falsely by my name, profaning the name of your God; I am the Lord.
Do not oppress your neighbor or steal from him. The wages of a hired worker should not remain with you all night until morning.
You must not curse a deaf person or put a stumbling block in front of the blind, but you must respect your God; I am the Lord.
Do not distort justice; do not show favoritism to the poor or bow down to the great; you must judge your neighbor fairly to avoid sharing in his guilt.
Do not go around slandering your people, nor seek the death of your neighbor; I am the Lord.
Do not harbor hatred in your heart against your brother; openly confront your neighbor to avoid sharing in their guilt.
Do not seek revenge or hold a grudge against any of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself; I am the Lord.
Keep my practices.
You must not let your cattle breed with a different kind. You must not sow your field with two types of seeds or wear clothing made from two different materials.
If a man has relations with a woman who is a slave betrothed to another man, and she has not been redeemed or granted her freedom, there shall be punishment. They shall not be put to death because she was not free,
but he shall bring a ram as a guilt offering to the Lord for himself, to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting.
The priest is to make atonement for him before the Lord with the ram of the guilt offering, and the sin he has committed will be forgiven.
When you enter the land and plant all kinds of trees for food, you shall consider the fruit unclean. For three years, it shall be unclean for you and must not be eaten.
In the fourth year, all the fruit shall be holy, an offering of praise to the Lord.
But in the fifth year, you may eat the fruit so that its yield may increase. I am the Lord, your God.
Do not eat anything with blood or practice divination or astrology.
Do not shave the side growth of your head or trim the edges of your beard.
Do not make cuts in your flesh for the dead or tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the Lord.
You shall not profane your daughter by making her a prostitute, lest the land turn to prostitution and be filled with wickedness.
Keep my Sabbaths and revere my Sanctuary. I am the Lord.
Do not turn to mediums or consult spirits; they will defile you. I am the Lord, your God.
Rise in the presence of the elderly and honor them; in doing so, you honor your God. I am the Lord.
When a stranger lives among you in your land, do not mistreat him.
He shall be as one of your native-born. Love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt. I am the Lord, your God.
Do no wrong in judgment, measurement, weight, or quantity.
Use honest scales, honest weights, and precise containers. I am the Lord, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt.
You shall keep and follow all my laws and regulations. I am the Lord.”
