for human anger does not accomplish the righteousness of God.
Commentaries
1:19 - 1:27
Hear, Speak, and Do.
It is not enough to know the Word; it must also be put into practice (Mt 7:24-27; Lk 8:21). James continues to provide key principles that help us understand God’s actual plan. To do this, he refers to a three-part wisdom saying that emphasizes listening, careful speech, and patience in anger (Sir 5:9-15; Prov 10:19). From verse 21 onward, he returns to the theme of the life-giving Word using the metaphor of sowing. The Word needs soil free of impurities and evil. James cares deeply about the consistency between the Word and how we live, and this concern remains vital for Christians today. The primary focus of verses 26 and following is true religion. James distinguishes between false and genuine religiosity. One factor that corrupts religion is the unrestrained use of language: slander, gossip, rumors, and so on. Conversely, true religion is closely linked to the practice of social justice, symbolized by caring for orphans and widows (cf. Is 1:10-20; Jr 7).
