13:17 - 13:22

Towards the Red Sea.

It is clear that an event as significant to the Israelite faith and religion as the liberation from Egyptian power contains variations. Scholars identify two traditions within this passage, summarized into distinct strands: the Yahwist (J) and the Elohist (E). These reflect that the exodus likely did not happen in just one day, nor was it carried out by a single group or through a single route of escape. It must be recognized that the exodus was a process led by multiple groups, with several expeditions taking different paths.
Furthermore, as seen in 12:38, the liberation was not achieved solely by the Hebrew ethnic group. Other groups joined in, either living in Egypt itself, along the desert routes, or in the land of Canaan, which, as we know, had to endure the hardships of Egyptian oppression. Recognizing these perspectives does not change our traditional understanding of the exodus; on the contrary, it deepens our understanding of our Christian journey as that of an oppressed community seeking to free itself from the domination of modern Pharaohs. There is a strong belief in the harmony of the people’s aspirations with God’s will, expressed by the divine presence by day and night, whether as a pillar of clouds during the day or a pillar of fire at night.
