In every way I have shown you that by working hard one must help the weak, remembering the words that the Lord Jesus himself said, ‘Happiness lies more in giving than in receiving.’”

20:17 - 20:38

Farewell to the Ephesians.

When Paul arrived in Miletus, a town very close to Ephesus, he called the “elders” (presbyters/leaders) of the Christian communities of Ephesus and the nearby regions to deliver a farewell speech. Luke records this speech as an interpretation of Paul’s character and mission as understood in the Christian communities he founded. He recounts his missionary efforts and looks toward the future. That “future” was already a reality in the many Christian communities across the Empire. In the end, everyone is overwhelmed with emotion. Amid prayers, tears, and embraces, Paul is escorted to the ship. They would never see him again. His farewell speech, however, remains a meaningful and powerful testament that continues to challenge our Christian leaders and communities today.
