The pilgrims admire the high, reinforced walls of Jerusalem—an image of God’s protection. This prayer is for dark times when we feel powerless against injustice and organized violence, including corruption and stupidity—perhaps even within the Church. Yet, the Church is built on a rock—rock-solid and rock-enclosed. Our faith will face trials, but abandoning this fortress means abandoning our only hope. The loving embrace of God for his people becomes a constant presence of the Lord in his Church (Mt 28:20). By trusting in God, we can be confident—even amid conflict.
