This chapter maintains thematic coherence by opposing the work; however, it does not follow the chronological order, which is: Cyrus, Darius, Xerxes, Artaxerxes. Additionally, from verse 8 onward, the narrative is in Aramaic. Concerning their rivals (1), they identify as descendants of colonists relocated by the Assyrians, practicing a form of religious syncretism that was incompatible with the Israelite faith. They had learned to worship the God of Israel alongside their own gods. Accepting their offer would have threatened the developing community, which is why the Jewish authorities rejected it. After this refusal, the settlers began to create obstacles (4). Orders from above came to halt the work; the Jews had to accept the ultimatum for now until another opportunity arose. This task would be Nehemiah’s contribution.
