Othniel.

It seems that Israel’s wickedness is never-ending. The people are in a constant cycle of decline. First, they do what the Lord disapproves of, breaking their covenant with God. Second, they forget God. Third, they serve the gods of Canaan. Fourth, the consequences of these sins “force” God to hand the people over to invading enemies (4:2; 10:7). Finally, the Israelites become subjugated until they cry out to the Lord for help. God hears their cries and raises up Othniel as their deliverer. God’s grace is with Othniel, a true Israelite, who will lead the people and bring internal reform. Ultimately, Othniel fights against the oppressor and wins because the Spirit of the Lord is with him.
