Collection for the Faithful in Jerusalem and Final Greetings.

The collection for the Mother Church in Jerusalem demonstrates the solidarity of Christians from pagan backgrounds with the Jewish Christians living in Palestine, an area periodically affected by famine and starvation. Paul sees it mainly as a sign of church unity. The collection was gathered during the Sunday worship service. At the end of the letter, the Apostle returns to a familiar style, announcing a future visit, offering greetings, and issuing advice and warnings. The mention of “the churches” (in the plural) of Asia, whose greetings he shares, reflects the organization of Paul’s Christians gathered in small domestic groups. The greeting “Maranatha” became one of the ways Christians greeted each other (cf. Rev 22:20), thus adding to the traditional Jewish greeting of ‘shalom’ (peace). The letter concludes with the most important message Paul wants to share: “I love you all in Christ Jesus” (24).
