[D] Work on the Sanctuary.

As the work progresses, donations continue to pour in, so much so that the craftsmen have to consult with Moses because there is an excess of materials. Moses then has to order a halt to the donations. Most likely, these chapters—or at least most of this extensive priestly document (P)—were written during exile, when there was no temple in Jerusalem. The priestly tradition (P) idealizes the new temple—as does the prophet Ezekiel (Ezk 40-44)—but it envisions the order of its construction as happening during the time of the desert, where the Lord would have demanded not a proper temple but something that would serve as a model for the final one. Here, we see an idealized construction and an example of generosity so grand that it exceeds all expectations. However, comparing this to the message of Haggai and Zechariah, which aimed to “shake” the people—especially the wealthy class—into starting the reconstruction after the exile, reveals that the reality was very different.
