These verses reflect a belief from the ancient Near East that divinity possessed a book inscribed with the names of its followers. Israel is familiar with this belief and adapts it to its own perspective. For example, when a census was taken in Israel, a ransom was paid, a rite of atonement was performed, and the names of those registered were engraved on tablets. Anyone who was “erased from the tablets” or from the book was separated from the community, indicating that he was definitively dead. Therefore, there is no basis for any doctrine of eternal death or hell. The entire chapter, which draws on various sources, aims to illustrate the theological concept of renewing the Covenant, comprising the following elements: 1. Sin, usually understood as apostasy. 2. Punishment. 3. Repentance. 4. Restoration.
