Saint Lawrence Ruiz and companions
Martyrs, Optional Memorial
Other Celebrations for this Day:
Liturgical Cycle: A, B, C | Lectionary Cycle: I, II
Introduction
The martyrs we honour today shed their blood at Nagasaki, Japan, in the years 1633-1637. Among them were Dominican priests, religious brothers and sisters, and three laymen. The person who heads the list was a married layman who had a Chinese Father and a Filipina mother. Involved in a criminal case, he fled to Japan. He refused to renounce his faith, saying, “I am a Christian, and I shall die for God, and for him I would give many thousands of lives if I had them.”
Opening Prayer
Lord God,
give us the endurance of your martyrs
Lorenzo Ruiz and companions
in serving you and our neighbour;
for those who suffer persecution for justice’s sake
are blessed in the kingdom of heaven.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God for ever and ever.
First Reading
The Seven Brothers and Their Mother
It happened also that seven brothers were arrested with their mother. The king had them scourged and flogged to force them to eat the flesh of a pig, which was prohibited by the law.
One of them, speaking on behalf of all, said: “What do you want to find out from us? We are prepared to die right now rather than break the law of our ancestors.”
At the moment of his last breath, he said: “Murderer, you now dismiss us from life, but the king of the world will raise us up. He will give us eternal life since we die for his laws.”
After this, they punished the third. He stuck his tongue out when asked to, bravely stretched forth his hands,
and even dared to say: “I have received these limbs from God, but for love of his laws, I now consider them as nothing. For I hope to recover them from God.”
This young man’s courage touched the king and his court, so unconcerned about his sufferings.
When this one was dead, they subjected the fourth to the same torture.
At the point of death, he cried out: “I would rather die at the hands of mortals and wait for the promises of God who will raise us up; you, however, shall have no part in the resurrection of life.”
Responsorial Psalm
R. (5) The Lord delivered me from all my fears.
I will bless the LORD at all times;
his praise shall be ever in my mouth.
Let my soul glory in the LORD;
the lowly will hear me and be glad.
R. (5) The Lord delivered me from all my fears.
Glorify the LORD with me,
let us together extol his name.
I sought the LORD, and he answered me
and delivered me from all my fears.
R. (5) The Lord delivered me from all my fears.
Look to him that you may be radiant with joy,
and your faces may not blush with shame.
When the afflicted man called out, the LORD heard,
and from all his distress he saved him.
R. (5) The Lord delivered me from all my fears.
The angel of the LORD encamps
around those who fear him, and delivers them.
Taste and see how good the LORD is;
blessed the man who takes refuge in him.
R. (5) The Lord delivered me from all my fears.
Alleluia Verse
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel
The Hostile World
If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first.
This wouldn’t happen if you belonged to the world, because the world loves its own. But you are not of the world, since I have chosen you out of it; because of this, the world hates you.
Remember what I told you: the servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted me, they would also persecute you. If they kept my word, they would also keep yours.
All this they will do to you because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me.
Prayers of the Faithful
Prayer over the Gifts
Father of holiness,
accept the gifts we bring before you
on this memorial of the holy martyrs,
and grant that we, your servants,
may also persevere in confessing your name.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Prayer after Communion
O God,
in the death of your holy martyrs
the mystery of the cross shines forth.
Grant that by the power of this sacrifice
we too may hold fast to Christ, your Son,
and labor in the Church for the salvation of all.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
